Let’s start with the tech news I have seen this week.

• Worldcoin is an eyeball-scanning technology; right now, there is a temporary ban on Portugal because it has some concerns over children’s privacy. Fun fact: this company is backed by Sam Altman and is now forbidden across almost all of Europe.
  

• SK Hynix, an Nvidia chip supplier, disclosed plans to construct a large-scale manufacturing facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, potentially creating 1,000 new employment opportunities by 2028.
  

• The UXL Foundation, a consortium of tech companies and researchers, works on an open-source computer code to end AI companies' reliance on Nvidia's proprietary tech. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Intel, Qualcomm, and Google are significant partners in the effort. MatX, a Silicon Valley startup founded by former Google employees, is developing chips with one large processing core for AI use, potentially offering up to 10 times more effectiveness in training LLMs.

It is nearly impossible to keep up with all the latest changes. But let me try to summarize them.

• You have already heard the story that Sam Altman hints at GPT-5 in a podcast interview. While this is in progress, Anthropic’s Claude Opus takes the throne from OpenAI’s GPT-4. Claude, a model from Anthropic, has surpassed GPT-4 in the LMSYS Chatbot Arena Leaderboard, placing it at the top. Even more surprising, Haiku, the smallest of the Claude 3 models, has outperformed an earlier version of GPT-4 despite being significantly cheaper.

• A study found that GPT-4, a large language model, can outperform humans in face-to-face persuasion and debate situations, especially when given personal information about the individual. In a personalized version, GPT-4 increased agreement with its positions by a staggering 81.7% compared to human-human debates. This persuasive power is attributed to the AI's ability to craft finely-tuned arguments using insights from a person's profile.
  

• HUME AI: First Conversational AI With Emotional Intelligence 🧠, Hume, an AI startup, has introduced the Empathic Voice Interface (EVI), a conversational AI assistant that can understand and respond to the emotional tone and context of voice interactions in human-like ways. EVI combines standard LLM capabilities with expression measuring techniques, making it an 'empathic large language model' or eLLM. Trained on millions of human interactions, EVI can understand when the user has finished speaking and generate an appropriate vocal response almost instantaneously. It also detects the emotional tone of a user's voice to add depth to interactions and tailor responses accordingly. They have already raised $50 million after building the most realistic GenAI chat.

• Amazon recently invested $2.75 billion in AI startup Anthropic, increasing its planned stake to $4 billion. This is the most significant venture investment in Amazon's history, and Anthropic will use AWS as its primary cloud provider. The company's latest AI model, Claude 3, has garnered praise and positioned Anthropic as a critical competitor to ChatGPT.
  

• Meta plans to add AI features into Ray-Ban smart glasses next month, allowing for functions like translation, object recognition, animal identification, and monument detection. This integration will provide users with more advanced and versatile intelligent glass capabilities.
